The Telling Bee Workshop

Mazovia Institute of Culture (12 Elektoralna Street)

A Telling Bee is a storytelling approach Dan created in Toronto schools. In a Telling Bee children and school staff begin by listening to the storytellers (parents, grandparents, neighbours, friends) in their lives. They then - with permission - collect, retell, write, and publish these stories. Often a school will publish a book including stories from every member of the school, from kindergarten students to the teachers. In this workshop, participants will learn the techniques and exercises I use to introduce and lead a Telling Bee. The approach has been adapted by storytellers in many places inspired by honey bees, in English we say “quilting bee”, “apple-picking bee”, “barn-raising bee” to describe people working together to create something beautiful. That’s where the name Telling Bee comes from.
