“Marguerite, the play's protagonist, has been rooted to her farm and has found strength there for the 14 years of her widowhood and is now facing the recent death of one of her two sons. In Marguerite, Warren has created the right balance of strength and discontent—a believable distillation of thousands of prairie farm women of her age and situation. Marguerite's exact opposite is world-weary Captain Harte; now in Pakistan but low on money and ill from malaria, he longs to return to Canada. He romanticizes her stability just as she romanticizes his adventurousness, and by the end of the play they have exchanged places.”
